Background
Gluteus medius (GM) tears are a known cause of hip pain and disability. The treatment for full-thickness GM tears can be complex, and open repair is sometimes necessary, especially when combined with other hip procedures like arthroscopy.
Methods
This study reviewed outcomes for patients who had open repairs for full-thickness GM tears, either with or without accompanying hip arthroscopy. Patients' pain levels, hip function, and satisfaction were evaluated before and after surgery over a minimum of 2 years.
Key Findings
Significant improvements were observed in hip function and pain relief. The average improvement in pain and function was substantial, with many patients experiencing marked gains in their ability to perform daily activities.
Conclusions
Open repair of GM tears, even when combined with other hip surgeries, leads to favorable long-term results, improving both pain and function.
What Does This Mean for Patients
If you have a full-thickness gluteus medius tear, an open repair could significantly improve your hip function and relieve pain, even if you also require other hip surgeries.
