Background
Some high-level athletes experience issues in both hips and may need surgery on both sides (bilateral hip arthroscopy). Previous research has shown high return-to-sport (RTS) rates after unilateral hip surgery, but the outcomes after bilateral surgery were not well understood.
Methods
This study followed 87 athletes who underwent bilateral hip arthroscopy, looking at their return-to-sport rates and functional outcomes after at least one year. They also compared the outcomes of male versus female athletes.
Key Findings
53.7% of athletes returned to their sport, with male athletes having a significantly higher return rate than female athletes. Those who returned to sport had better functional outcomes, including higher scores on physical function assessments.
Conclusions
Athletes who undergo bilateral hip arthroscopy can return to their sport at similar rates to those who have surgery on only one hip. However, male athletes tend to have a higher return rate than female athletes.
What Does This Mean for Patients
If you're an athlete facing hip surgery on both sides, you can expect a good chance of returning to your sport. Your recovery may depend on gender, with males generally having higher return rates.
