Background
Orthopedic surgeons are often seen as experts in musculoskeletal injuries, but as team physicians, they are sometimes required to manage nonmusculoskeletal injuries as well. This article discusses the importance of team physicians being able to handle a wide range of injuries, including those outside their usual scope.
Methods
The article reviews common nonmusculoskeletal issues that team physicians may encounter, including cerebral/neurologic, ocular, dental, respiratory/pulmonary, cardiac, abdominal, and genitourinary injuries in athletes.
Key Findings
The authors suggest that orthopedic team physicians should be familiar with diagnosing and initiating management for a variety of nonmusculoskeletal conditions to provide comprehensive care to athletes.
Conclusions
Team physicians must have a well-rounded understanding of common nonmusculoskeletal injuries, as these can significantly impact an athlete’s health and performance.
What Does This Mean for Patients
Athletes can expect team physicians to provide care not only for musculoskeletal injuries but also for other health concerns that may arise during sporting activities.
