Background

Acetabuloplasty is a procedure where the hip socket is reshaped to treat impingement. Incomplete resection of acetabular bone can cause complications. This study introduces the "upper deck view" technique to improve visualization during acetabuloplasty and prevent incomplete resection.

Methods

This prospective study assessed the use of the "upper deck view" during 87 hip arthroscopies. The team recorded the amount of acetabular bone resected and whether residual bone was detected only using this specialized view.

Key Findings

The "upper deck view" successfully identified residual acetabular bone in 92% of cases, which was missed under standard fluoroscopy. The technique helped ensure more complete acetabuloplasty and reduce the risk of complications.

Conclusions

The "upper deck view" is a valuable technique that improves visualization during acetabular surgery, reducing the risk of incomplete acetabular resection and ensuring better patient outcomes.

What Does This Mean for Patients

If you're undergoing acetabular surgery, this new visualization technique may reduce the risk of residual bone and improve the outcome of your procedure.
