Background

There is a risk that some patients who undergo hip arthroscopy may eventually need a hip replacement. A previously published calculator can predict this risk. This study validates the accuracy of that calculator.

Methods

Data from 1400 patients who had hip arthroscopy were reviewed. The risk of conversion to THA was calculated using the published calculator and compared to actual outcomes.

Key Findings

The calculator was 75% accurate in predicting the risk of needing THA within two years and 73% accurate at four years. The factors it takes into account include age, hip scores, and femoral anteversion.

Conclusions

The risk calculator can accurately predict the likelihood that a patient will need THA after hip arthroscopy, which helps guide treatment decisions and patient counseling.

What Does This Mean for Patients

If you're undergoing hip arthroscopy, the doctor can use this risk calculator to estimate your chances of needing a hip replacement later, helping you make informed decisions about your treatment and recovery.
