Background
Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) lesions of the femoral head are challenging to treat. This article discusses using fresh femoral head osteochondral allograft transplantation to treat these lesions.
Methods
The technique involves open surgical dislocation of the hip and osteochondral transplantation using a fresh femoral head allograft. This approach avoids donor-site morbidity and allows for treatment of larger lesions.
Key Findings
The use of fresh femoral head allografts provides an effective solution for treating large OCD lesions, improving access to difficult-to-reach areas of the femoral head.
Conclusions
Fresh femoral head allograft transplantation is a viable and effective treatment for OCD lesions of the femoral head that cannot be adequately addressed through arthroscopy alone.
What Does This Mean for Patients
Patients with large OCD lesions may benefit from this minimally invasive technique, which provides a functional and durable solution to preserve the hip joint.
