Background
Ligamentum teres (LT) tears are commonly found in patients with hip labral pathology. The study examines the relationship between LT tear severity and labral damage.
Methods
1,723 surgeries were performed between 2010 and 2016. Labral width and LT, labrum, and cartilage conditions were assessed arthroscopically.
Key Findings
Grade 2 LT tears (50-99% torn) had larger labra compared to grade 1 and grade 3 tears. Complete LT tears (grade 3) showed more labral damage and more severe cartilage injury.
Conclusions
Partial LT tears are associated with less labral damage and better-preserved cartilage than full-thickness tears. Degenerative tears demonstrated the most severe damage.
What Does This Mean for Patients
Partial LT tears may have a better prognosis, preserving labral and cartilage integrity and influencing surgical outcomes.
