Background

Tennis players often experience hip injuries that require arthroscopic surgery. While outcomes for athletes are generally positive, there is limited data on the long-term success and return to sport (RTS) for tennis players specifically.

Methods

This study reviewed the outcomes of 28 tennis players who underwent hip arthroscopy for femoroacetabular impingement and labral tears. The focus was on return to sport and improvement in patient-reported outcomes (PROs) after a minimum of five years.

Key Findings

Significant improvements in PROs were observed, including pain reduction and better hip function. 75% of tennis players returned to playing, with the majority reporting a high level of satisfaction. Competitive players had similar outcomes to recreational players.

Conclusions

Tennis players, whether competitive or recreational, can expect significant improvements in hip function and a high rate of return to sport after hip arthroscopy.

What Does This Mean for Patients

If you’re a tennis player considering hip arthroscopy, the surgery can help you return to playing with improved hip function and less pain, regardless of your competitive level.
