Background

Asymptomatic contralateral hips in patients with femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) often show labral tears, which raises concerns about the implications of these findings on treatment planning.

Methods

Review of studies examining imaging findings in asymptomatic hips, including labral tears and chondral damage.

Key Findings

Labral tears were found in approximately 40% of asymptomatic hips, and chondral damage was seen in 15%. 21% of asymptomatic labral tears become symptomatic within two years.

Conclusions

Imaging findings in asymptomatic hips should be carefully considered. While many cases remain asymptomatic, the potential for progression warrants careful monitoring and patient education.

What Does This Mean for Patients

Asymptomatic hips with labral tears or FAI may develop symptoms over time, and patients should be informed about the risks and monitored accordingly.
