Background

This study compares intra-articular damage and postoperative outcomes between athletes and nonathletes after hip arthroscopy for femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS).

Methods

  • 234 patients (athletes and nonathletes) who underwent primary hip arthroscopy were analyzed.
  • Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) were measured before and after surgery, including the modified Harris Hip Score, NAHS, Hip Outcome Score-Sport Specific Subscale, and VAS.

Key Findings

  • No significant differences were found in the severity of intra-articular damage between athletes and nonathletes.
  • Athletes had higher preoperative scores but showed greater postoperative improvements, especially in physical and mental health measures.

Conclusions

Although athletes show similar intra-articular damage to nonathletes, their higher preoperative function may contribute to better postoperative outcomes, especially for physical and mental health.

What Does This Mean For Patients

Whether you're an athlete or not, hip arthroscopy can lead to significant improvement, but athletes may show greater recovery due to their higher baseline physical capacity.
