Background
This study examines the outcomes of patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA) combined with gluteus medius (GM) repair using the direct anterior approach (DAA), a method that has not been widely reported.
Methods
- 14 female patients underwent primary THA with GM repair using the DAA between 2015 and 2018.
- Outcomes were measured using patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), comparing results to a matched control group who had THA without GM tear.
Key Findings
- Significant improvements were observed in all PROMs, with high rates of achieving the minimal clinically important difference (MCID) at 2-year follow-up.
- The GM repair group showed similar results to the control group, with no significant differences in satisfaction or functional outcomes.
Conclusions
THA combined with GM repair using the DAA offers good functional outcomes and a high rate of improvement, comparable to patients who underwent THA without GM tear.
What Does This Mean For Patients
If you're considering hip replacement surgery and have a gluteus medius tear, the DAA combined with GM repair could provide effective outcomes similar to traditional hip replacement surgery.
