Background
Hip arthroscopy is a growing treatment option for adolescents with hip conditions such as labral tears or femoroacetabular impingement (FAI). However, the effectiveness and return-to-sport (RTS) outcomes in this population were not well understood.
Methods
This systematic review compiled data from 10 studies involving 618 adolescent hips. Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) like the modified Harris Hip Score and return-to-sport rates were analyzed.
Key Findings
Across studies, adolescents showed significant improvement in PROs post-surgery. The return-to-sport rate was 84.9%, with most patients returning at a high level of performance.
Conclusions
Hip arthroscopic surgery leads to significant functional improvements for adolescents with FAI or labral tears, with many athletes returning to sports at high levels.
What Does This Mean for Patients
If you're an adolescent athlete with hip pain, hip arthroscopy can significantly improve your function and help you return to sports at a high level.
