Background
- External snapping hip (ESH) and femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS) are common hip disorders that can cause pain and functional limitations.
- This study investigates the outcomes of patients undergoing hip arthroscopy for FAIS and painful ESH, with treatment of ESH via release of the gluteus maximus and iliotibial band.
Methods
- The study prospectively collected data from patients with both FAIS and painful ESH who underwent hip arthroscopy between 2009 and 2018.
- Outcomes, including the modified Harris Hip Score (mHHS), Non-Arthritic Hip Score (NAHS), Hip Outcome Score-Sports Specific Subscale (HOS-SSS), and visual analog scale (VAS), were compared to a matched control group.
Key Findings
- 100% of patients experienced complete resolution of snapping hip symptoms.
- There were significant improvements in all PROs at a minimum two-year follow-up.
- The results for patients with ESH were comparable to those of the FAIS control group, indicating similar outcomes in terms of pain relief and function.
Conclusions
- For patients with both FAIS and painful ESH, hip arthroscopy with release of the gluteus maximus and iliotibial band provides complete resolution of the snapping hip and significant improvement in hip function.
- These patients had comparable outcomes to those with FAIS alone.
What Does This Mean for Patients
- If you have both FAIS and painful ESH, hip arthroscopy with the release of the gluteus maximus and iliotibial band can provide significant pain relief and improve hip function, with outcomes similar to those who only have FAIS.
