Background

Borderline hip dysplasia (BD) can lead to hip instability and labral damage in athletes, but the outcomes of hip arthroscopy in these athletes have not been well-documented.

Methods

This study looked at athletes with BD who underwent hip arthroscopy for labral problems. The study compared their outcomes with athletes who had normal hip anatomy, with a focus on patient-reported outcomes (PROs) and return-to-sport (RTS) rates.

Key Findings

Athletes with BD showed significant improvement in PROs and had high RTS rates (80.7%), similar to athletes with normal hips. Capsular plication (tightening of the hip capsule) was performed more often in BD patients, which likely contributed to their success.

Conclusions

Hip arthroscopy can lead to favorable outcomes in athletes with borderline hip dysplasia, with improvements in hip function and a high return-to-sport rate. Capsular plication appears to be an important part of successful treatment for these athletes.

What Does This Mean for Patients

If you have borderline hip dysplasia and are an athlete, hip arthroscopy may be a good option to treat labral damage, with good chances of returning to your sport after recovery.
