Background
Hip arthroscopy is effective for treating femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) and labral tears, but the cost-effectiveness of this treatment compared to nonoperative options remains unclear.
Methods
A systematic review of studies examining the cost-effectiveness of hip arthroscopy for FAI and labral tears was conducted. The studies compared hip arthroscopy to nonoperative treatments based on cost per quality-adjusted life-year (QALY).
Key Findings
While hip arthroscopy typically has a higher initial cost than nonoperative treatments, it offers greater long-term benefits in terms of quality of life. In certain patients, hip arthroscopy can be considered cost-effective, particularly if the benefits last long enough.
Conclusions
Although more expensive upfront, hip arthroscopy may provide significant long-term benefits that justify the cost, depending on patient selection and the duration of benefit.
What Does This Mean for Patients
If you're considering hip arthroscopy, the treatment is generally cost-effective in the long term, especially if you expect lasting improvements in hip function and quality of life.
