Hip Replacement

What is Hip Replacement?
A total hip replacement involves removing the damaged joint surfaces and replacing them with a metal cup in the hip socket and a metal stem in the femur. A durable plastic (polyethylene) liner is placed between the ball and socket to create a smooth, non-metal-on-metal surface for pain-free movement. Most patients are able to bear weight as tolerated shortly after surgery.

What Conditions is Hip Replacement Indicated For?
Hip replacement surgery can be an effective solution for a variety of conditions that severely damage the hip joint, including:
- Osteoarthritis: The cartilage in the hip joint gradually wears away from years of use.
- Inflammatory Arthritis: This broad term refers to conditions like rheumatoid arthritis or lupus. In these conditions, the immune system attacks the joint, causing chronic inflammation.
- Avascular necrosis (AVN): This occurs when there is a loss of blood supply leads to the death of bone tissue in the femoral head.
In all of these conditions, the damage can progress to the point where the cartilage is completely lost and the bones of the hip joint begin to rub against each other. This bone-on-bone contact results in significant pain, stiffness, and limited movement.
When non-surgical treatments are no longer effective, hip replacement surgery can relieve pain, restore mobility, and greatly improve a patient’s quality of life by replacing the damaged joint with a smooth, artificial implant.
