Purpose

To compare outcomes of arthroscopic labral reconstruction versus segmental resection in patients with irreparable labral tears in the setting of femoroacetabular impingement (FAI).

Methods

A matched-pair cohort study comparing 11 patients undergoing labral reconstruction (RECON) to 22 undergoing resection (RESEC). Patient-reported outcomes were assessed with validated hip scores at a minimum 2-year follow-up.

Key Findings

  • The RECON group showed significantly greater improvements in NAHS and HOS-ADL scores.
  • Both groups improved, but reconstruction yielded superior functional outcomes.

Conclusion

Labral reconstruction offers better short-term clinical outcomes than segmental resection for irreparable labral tears in patients with FAI.

What This Means for Patients

For patients with severely damaged labral tissue in the hip, reconstruction may provide better long-term function and pain relief compared to simply removing the damaged section.
