Arthroscopic Treatment of Hip Pain in Adolescent Patients With Borderline Dysplasia of the Hip: Minimum 2-Year Follow-Up

Arthroscopy. 2017 Aug;33(8):1530-1536
DOI: 10.1016/j.arthro.2017.03.008

Purpose

To examine arthroscopic treatment of hip pain in patients with borderline hip dysplasia (lateral center edge angle [LCEA] between 20° and 25°).

Methods

Retrospective matched cohort study of patients under 18 undergoing arthroscopic hip surgery with LCEA 20°–25° compared to controls without dysplasia (LCEA ≥25°). Patient-reported outcomes collected with various hip scores and pain scales. Minimum 2-year follow-up.

Results

Both groups showed significant improvement in all outcome measures with no statistical difference between groups at follow-up.

Conclusions

Arthroscopic labral treatment and capsular plication in adolescents with borderline dysplasia yield favorable outcomes comparable to controls without dysplasia.

What Does This Mean for Patients

Adolescents with mild hip dysplasia can experience significant symptom relief and improved function through arthroscopic surgery addressing labral and stability issues.
