Objective
To assess the variability in reported Patient Acceptable Symptom State (PASS) and Substantial Clinical Benefit (SCB) thresholds for hip arthroscopy.
Methodology
A systematic review of 35 studies reporting PASS and SCB values across 13 patient-reported outcomes for hip arthroscopy. Only studies with Level I–IV evidence on intra-articular hip pathology were included.
Key Findings
- There is significant variability in threshold values due to differences in patient demographics, outcome tools, follow-up timepoints, sample sizes, and definitions of improvement.
- PASS values for sport-specific outcomes ranged from 63.9 to 86.8, and SCB thresholds for the iHOT tool ranged from 66.7 to 87.5.
Conclusion
Recovery benchmarks for hip arthroscopy are not universally applicable. Surgeons should consider individual patient characteristics and time since surgery when interpreting outcomes.
What Does This Mean For Patients
Recovery goals after hip arthroscopy can vary widely. Patients should discuss their specific recovery benchmarks with their surgeon to ensure they align with their personal circumstances and timeline.
