Background

Some patients undergoing total hip replacement also have tears in an important hip muscle called the gluteus medius. These tears can be repaired at the same time as the hip replacement. Surgeons can perform the hip replacement using different surgical approaches.

Methods

This study compared two groups of patients who had hip replacement with gluteus medius repair. One group had a front-based approach to surgery, and the other had a back-based approach. Patients were followed for at least 2 years.

Key Findings

  • Both groups improved significantly after surgery in terms of pain and hip function.
  • Patients in both groups had similar outcomes after surgery.
  • There were no meaningful differences in satisfaction, recovery scores, or need for additional surgery between the two approaches.

Conclusion

Both surgical approaches for hip replacement with gluteus medius repair lead to similar and good outcomes.

What Does This Mean For Patients

If you need a hip replacement and also have a gluteus medius tear, your surgeon may use either a front or back approach. This study shows that both approaches lead to similar recovery and long-term results.
