Background
Gluteus medius (GM) tears are a common cause of hip pain, especially in older adults. However, little is known about whether men and women experience different symptoms or outcomes after surgery.
Methods
The study compared the clinical presentations and patient-reported outcomes (PROs) for men and women who underwent GM repair surgery. The outcomes were measured using the modified Harris Hip Score (mHHS) and Non-arthritic Hip Score (NAHS) after at least 2 years.
Key Findings
Both men and women showed significant improvements in PROs post-surgery, with women benefiting slightly more in some areas.
Men were older and had a higher risk of lumbar pathology (lower back issues) than women.
Conclusions
Both men and women can experience substantial improvements after GM repair. However, men may have more complications related to the lower back and could have different outcomes.
What Does This Mean for Patients
If you have a gluteus medius tear and are considering surgery, both genders can expect positive outcomes. However, men might need to consider other factors like back problems that could affect recovery.
