Background

Labral tears in the hip are common in patients with femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS), and two main surgical techniques are used to address them: labral repair and labral reconstruction. There is limited data comparing the long-term results of these two approaches.

Methods

This systematic review analyzed 10 studies comparing patient-reported outcomes (PROs) in patients who underwent either labral repair or reconstruction for FAIS. PROs such as the modified Harris Hip Score (mHHS) and Nonarthritic Hip Score (NAHS) were assessed.

Key Findings

Both labral repair and reconstruction resulted in significant improvements in PROs, with large effect sizes for both treatments.

Patients who underwent labral reconstruction had a slightly higher rate of needing total hip arthroplasty (THA) later on.

Conclusions

Both labral repair and reconstruction lead to significant improvements in hip function and pain. However, repair may offer slightly better results with a lower risk of conversion to THA.

What Does This Mean for Patients

If you have a labral tear due to FAIS, either labral repair or reconstruction could significantly improve your hip function. Labral repair might be preferable if you want to reduce the risk of needing a hip replacement in the future.
