Background

Gluteus medius (GM) tears can cause significant pain, particularly in patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA) for osteoarthritis. However, the impact of these tears in THA patients has been less well studied.

Methods

This study examined patients who underwent both THA and GM tear repair. The patients were assessed using various patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) at an average follow-up of 24 months. Both anterior and posterior approaches were used for the surgery.

Key Findings

Significant improvements were seen in most PROMs after surgery, indicating that patients experienced reduced pain and improved hip function following GM tear repair during THA.

Conclusions

The study demonstrates that GM tear repair, performed alongside primary THA using modern suture anchor techniques, results in favorable short-term outcomes.

What Does This Mean for Patients

If you are undergoing hip replacement surgery and also have a GM tear, this procedure can lead to significant improvement in pain and function in the short term.
