Background
Femoral version is known to vary based on age, gender, and other factors. Abnormal femoral version may contribute to hip pathology, but normative data on pathological hips were lacking.
Methods
A database of 1,449 hips with symptomatic hip pathology was reviewed. All patients underwent pre-operative MRI to measure femoral version.
Key Findings
The average femoral version of the entire group was 8.4 ± 9.2° (range: -23° to 63°). No significant differences were found based on age, gender, or other hip-related factors. A trend towards greater retroversion was observed in younger patients.
Conclusions
There is significant variation in femoral version in patients with symptomatic hip pathology, with retroversion more frequently seen in younger patients.
What Does This Mean for Patients
Understanding femoral version could help clinicians better evaluate and address the causes of hip pathology.
