Background
It is unclear whether the timing of symptom onset (acute vs. chronic) impacts outcomes of hip arthroscopy in adolescents with labral tears.
Methods: In this cohort of 194 adolescent patients, outcomes were compared based on symptom onset type. PROs included mHHS, NAHS, HOS-SSS, and VAS, with a minimum follow-up of two years.
Key Findings
Both groups improved significantly across all outcome measures. While the acute group had worse preoperative pain, final outcomes were similar between groups. A slightly higher revision rate was observed in the acute group.
Conclusions
Hip arthroscopy is effective in adolescents regardless of whether symptoms developed suddenly or over time.
What Does This Mean for Patients
Adolescents with labral tears can expect positive outcomes from hip arthroscopy, whether their symptoms are recent or long-standing.
