Purpose
To describe a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure called trochanteric micropuncture as a treatment for patients with gluteus medius tendinopathy who fail conservative treatment and have no discrete tendon tear visible.
Methods
The authors propose performing micropuncture at the greater trochanter insertion of the gluteus medius tendon to stimulate healing, based on techniques used successfully in tendinopathies of the elbow and shoulder. The procedure is performed endoscopically.
Key Findings
Although this is a technical note without a formal study, the authors’ experience suggests trochanteric micropuncture can effectively promote healing and reduce symptoms in patients with diffuse gluteus medius tendinopathy.
Conclusion
Trochanteric micropuncture is a promising minimally invasive treatment option for gluteus medius tendinopathy in patients where no discrete tears are found but who continue to have pain after conservative management.
What This Means for Patients
Patients with persistent lateral hip pain caused by tendinopathy of the gluteus medius muscle may benefit from this less invasive procedure that encourages tendon healing, potentially avoiding more extensive surgery.
