Important Update on Birmingham Hip Resurfacing
Recently, Smith+Nephew, the sole U.S. manufacturer of the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR) implant, has discontinued production of the device. While the BHR implant is no longer available in the United States, the American Hip Institute has access to alternative treatment options and will discuss all appropriate treatment options during your consultation.
Hip Resurfacing Surgery
Hip resurfacing is a bone-preserving alternative to total hip replacement for carefully selected patients with hip arthritis. Unlike a traditional total hip replacement, hip resurfacing preserves more of the patient's natural bone. During the procedure, only the damaged cartilage and bone on the surface of the femoral head are removed. The remaining healthy bone is preserved and covered with a smooth metal cap, while the hip socket is resurfaced with a matching implant. This approach is designed to relieve pain, restore hip function, and maintain as much natural bone as possible.
For appropriate candidates, hip resurfacing surgery may be performed in an outpatient setting, allowing patients to return home the same day and begin their recovery.

Hip resurfacing may be an option for:

- Male patients with good bone quality
